Dogs and Exercise! (June 09)
....
As a private dog trainer in Brisbane I have visited many homes where dog owners have made the following statement,

"But the person at the pet shop said that this breed doesn’t need much exercise."

I cringe every time I hear those words!!  O.K. so your St Bernard may need less exercise than your cattle dog, no one doubts that.   However the mere suggestion to the potential dog owner is in my view irresponsible and probably based on telling the customer what they want to hear to make the sale.  Not what is best for the dog.

The truth of the matter is all dogs need exercise!!  All my dog training clients know how much emphasis I put on exercising your dog.  In fact most are probably sick of me saying it!  Exercise and showing strong leadership are the keys to a successful dog-owner relationship and create balance in your dog.

I often tell my dog training clients about the documentary I watched on the National Geographic Channel on North American wolves.  Scientists placed GPS trackers on a pack of wild wolves and found that they travelled on average 21miles a day.  That’s nearly 34km!
Don’t panic I’m not about to tell you go that far, but hopefully it shows that taking a dog out of its natural environment and locking it in a suburban back yard causes physical and mental frustration for your dog.  Exercising your dog should be the basis of any dog training or dog obedience program.

Is it no wonder dogs dig holes, rip up gardens, chew furniture, pull washing off the line, and bark…the list goes on and on.  Your dog is trying to tell you something, “I’m physically and mentally bored.”

So before you waste money on lots of expensive dog toys and treats, try these simple steps:

1. Pick up your lead
2. Put it on your dog
3. Walk!

...It’s what he really wants!
