WHAT TYPE OF TRAINING METHODS DO YOU USE?Primarily we use a training method which offers praise for good behaviour and some form of correction for unwanted behaviour- Mother Nature’s recipe for learning. Spot On Dog Training believes a good trainer doesn’t stick to one method. As it is for people, not all dogs respond to one single method best. A smart trainer should have choices. If you only train using one method: What is your ‘Plan B’ if ‘Plan A’ fails.
DO YOU USE PUNISHMENT OR PRAISE?
The word punishment gives the impression that cruel methods are being used. Spot On Dog Training certainly does not endorse any form of cruelty. Corrections however need to be used for unwanted behaviour. This may take the form of a simple body gesture or use of voice (not shouting). Praise is certainly used as a reward for wanted behaviour and can take many forms, especially hand (patting) voice praise.
WHY DON’T YOU DO GROUP CLASSES?We try to provide the best environment for learning. The distraction of other dogs does not provide this environment. Usually in group classes with several dogs the ‘problem child’ of the group takes up most of the instructor’s time at the expense of other participants. Also we want to fix your problems where they happen and fast!!
WHAT’S THE RIGHT AGE TO START?
Anytime from 10 weeks is great! The earlier the better! However age is not a barrier to training dogs (and their owners). Spot On’s oldest K9 student was 13 years! Proving, you can teach an old dog new tricks!
DO I NEED SPECIAL EQUIPMENT?
DO I NEED SPECIAL EQUIPMENT?We have most training equipment that is needed. Down the track you may be advised to purchase some equipment depending on your needs. Comfortable clothes and shoes for walking and your dog lead will do for now!
CAN YOU TEACH OBEDIENCE?
Yes we can. Some obedience commands are taught to achieve a certain response, like sitting in front of guests when they walk in your residence instead of jumping on them. If you would like to have some tricks simply to show your friends and family, we can teach you. Obedience provides an excellent way to stimulate your dog mentally and provide interaction.
